Mathemagicians Converge at Central Services to Test their Skills While Competing with Like Minds
Math enthusiasts from around the county came together for Math Field Day. This year’s theme, Math Day in a Winter Wonderland, provided fun, holiday-themed challenges.
Fallston's Freezing Fractions won first overall, Boiling Springs’ Solving Snowflakes finished second, while The Fast and the Flurries Team 1 of Kings Mountain Intermediate and Springmore’s Solution Squad tied for third place.
The initial challenge, Math Day in a Winter Wonderland, required students to use their mental math skills to answer a total of 50 questions. Students were required to solve the problems mentally without using paper or pencil.
The individuals from the following teams emerged as the winners of the Math Day in a Winter Wonderland challenge:
- Boiling Springs’ Solving Snowflakes: Cohen Ford
- Casar’s Calculating Candy Canes: Cody McNeilly and Joseph White
- Fallston’s Freezing Fractions: Bryce Wellmon
- Kings Mountain Intermediate’s The Fast and the Flurries Team 1: Colton Moore
- Kings Mountain Intermediate’s The Fast and the Flurries Team 2: Barrett Huffstetler
- Shelby Inter mediate’s Ice Cold Mega-Minds Team 1: Cruz Scott
- Shelby Intermediate’s Ice Cold Mega-Minds Team 2: Noah Woods-Mercer
- Springmore’s Solution Squad: Mason Smith
- Township Three’s Winter GOATs: Preston Ashe
- Union’s Math Sleighers: John Logan Harrill

In addition to the mental math challenge, the students faced four team-oriented problem-solving tasks.
The Prism Present Challenge - Students were required to design, construct, and solve problems dealing with area, perimeter, and volume. The winning team for this task was the Fallston’s Freezing Fractions.
Frosty’s Escape Room - Students were required to apply and extend their understanding of our place value system. The winning team for this task was also the Fallston’s Freezing Fractions.
All is Bright - Students were required to solve and write numerical expressions using their understanding of the order of operations. The winning team for this task was Union’s Math Sleighers.
The Snowman Shuffle - Students were required to solve real-world problems involving fractions and using all four operations. The winning team for this task was Casar’s Calculating Candy Canes.
For the teamwork portion of the skills day, the students were evaluated on how well they worked together, shared ideas, and communicated while solving math challenges. Fallston's Freezing Fractions won this award for exhibiting outstanding collaboration.
