For showing unrelenting effort to strive for high student achievement, Burns Middle School has been recognized by Solution Tree as a “Model Professional Learning Community at Work.” Burns Middle School is the first school in the Carolinas to receive this honor.

“We are honored to be designated a Model PLC School,” said Dr. Chris Bennett, principal at Burns Middle. “This designation shows the strengths of the systems and structures we have in place which have led to positive outcomes."

According to Solution Tree, a leading professional development company and publisher of educational material, Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) are schools and districts where not only is student learning very important, but staff development and learning is seen as a continuous process for sustained growth. It is a practice that best serves their students. PLCs emphasize the importance of educators to focus on learning, build a collaborative culture, and create a results orientation.

To earn this recognition, schools must demonstrate a commitment to these concepts, implementation of the concepts for at least three years, and evidence that these concepts have had a positive effect on student achievement during this time.

“Our staff works extremely hard to help students grow academically, behaviorally, and social emotionally,” added Bennett. “This designation validates our work toward total school improvement.”

According to the PLC selection committee, the schools who receive this recognition are demonstrative of “a sustained commitment to helping all of their students achieve at high levels. They have been willing to alter the structure and culture of the organization to reflect their commitment. We applaud them and congratulate them for achieving this very significant milestone on the never-ending PLC journey.”

“We are so proud of the team at Burns Middle School for the tremendous honor of becoming a Model Professional Learning Community," said Dr. Brian Hunnell, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction for Cleveland County Schools. “It continues to show their tremendous hard work and focus toward student success!”
