The Shelby Star recently conducted their annual Spelling Bee on Wednesday, March 24th in the Cleveland Community College auditorium.
With a whole lot of nerves, 22 CCS students competed for the title of 2021 Star Spelling Bee Champion. Consisting of complicated words like “jabberwocky” and “bailiff,” each student put in their best effort to spell their word correctly and make it to the next round.
Each round brought a new group of eliminations. It took 6 complete rounds to narrow the contestants down to the final 2. Fallston Elementary’s London Cornwell and James Love Elementary’s Nazalyn Hartgrove were the last competitors standing in Wednesday's competition.
To become the champion, the contestant needed to correctly spell their opponent’s missed word and also correctly spell a whole new word. By a flawless spelling of the words “ceramics” and “dismal,” London Cornwell took his place as the Star Spelling Bee Champion for Cleveland County Schools district.
Cornwell will go on to compete at the national level against hundreds of other students across the United States in the Scripps National Spelling Bee later this year.
