NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY

SHELBY HIGH SCHOOL

The following criteria are used in selection of students for the National Honor Society:  Students will be considered in the areas of SCHOLARSHIP, CHARACTER,

LEADERSHIP, and SERVICE.  From the procedures outlined below, a student

may receive a maximum score of 95.  A student must receive a minimum score of 70 to be selected for membership.

SCHOLARSHIP:  All juniors and seniors with a cumulative grade point average of  3.5 to 3.9 receive 40 points and 4.0 and above receive 50 points.

CHARACTER:  Based on the guidelines for character as stated in the student handbook, all teachers who feel they know the student well enough to do so will rate the student on a scale of 0, 5, 10, or 15 points.  These evaluations will be averaged for a final point value.

Quoting from the National Honor Society handbook, the student of good character:

  • Takes criticism willingly and accepts recommendations graciously.
  • Constantly exemplifies desirable qualities of personality (cheerfulness, friendliness, poise, stability).
  • Demonstrates the highest standards of honesty and reliability.
  • Upholds principles of morality and ethics.
  • Manifests truthfulness in acknowledging obedience to rules, avoiding cheating in written work, and showing unwillingness to profit by the mistakes of others.
  • Shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others.

LEADERSHIP:  From activity forms filled out by students, the faculty council will evaluate each student’s leadership with point values of 0 to 15.  The National Honor Society handbook defines student leaders as “those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, promoters of school activities, idea-contributors, dependable, and persons who exemplify positive attitudes about life.  Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others.”

SERVICE:  Evaluations will be done by the same method described under leadership with point values of 0 to 15.  The National Honor Society handbook states that service “is defined through the voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community, done without compensation and with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit.”
