NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY
The following criteria are used in selection of students for the National Honor Society: Students will be considered in the areas of SCHOLARSHIP, CHARACTER, LEADERSHIP, and SERVICE. From the procedures outlined below, a student may receive a maximum score of 95. A student must receive a minimum score of 70 to be selected for membership. SCHOLARSHIP: All juniors and seniors with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 to 3.9 receive 40 points and 4.0 and above receive 50 points. CHARACTER: Based on the guidelines for character as stated in the student handbook, all teachers who feel they know the student well enough to do so will rate the student on a scale of 0, 5, 10, or 15 points. These evaluations will be averaged for a final point value. Quoting from the National Honor Society handbook, the student of good character:
LEADERSHIP: From activity forms filled out by students, the faculty council will evaluate each student’s leadership with point values of 0 to 15. The National Honor Society handbook defines student leaders as “those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, promoters of school activities, idea-contributors, dependable, and persons who exemplify positive attitudes about life. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others.” SERVICE: Evaluations will be done by the same method described under leadership with point values of 0 to 15. The National Honor Society handbook states that service “is defined through the voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community, done without compensation and with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit.” All student information concerning National Honor Society is confidential.
