Orchestra

For 35 years, thanks to the support of the school system and surrounding community, the Shelby High School Orchestra has upheld a tradition of excellence and enriching musical experiences. The orchestra has performed several times with Mark Wood, electric violinist of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. During Mark’s residency the American String Teachers Association ran a full page advertisement in their journal featuring the Shelby Orchestra and Mark Wood. Wood honored his time in Shelby with a composition for the Shelby Orchestra, which they performed together as a world premier. This past October the orchestra had the experience of a lifetime, a residency with world-famous mandolinist, Mike Marshall. Shelby prides itself in being able to offer an education in music that covers both the traditional and the contemporary. Year after year Shelby Orchestra students win recognition at the regional and state levels. This past year Shelby reached a new high, having more students to make the Western Regional All-State Orchestra than any other orchestra program. The orchestra performs annually at the NCMEA State Orchestra Festival in Grade VI literature, where it has received numerous Superior ratings.

- SHS Orchestra is consistently rated Superior in Grade VI Music
- Students participate in Western-Regional All-State, NC Honors Orchestra and Governor's School
