Basketball: The Shelby High varsity men's and ladies' teams defeated Ashbrook on Wednesday evening. The men's team won 73-67. Senior Gabe Devoe lead the way with 36 points and Patrick Little added 14. For the ladies it was Taylor Little with 18 points, Rondrea Coleman with 13 points and Kori West with 10 points to lead the Lady Golden Lions to a 50-44 victory. Our Golden Lions travel to R-S Central on Thursday to the first game in conference play [2013.12.05].
Cleveland County High School Football Players of the Week: Congratulations to Jaquavis Brooks on being selected by the Shelby Star as player of the week. From the Star's website: Brooks personified the balanced Shelby offensive scheme in the 45-21 romp past North Rowan that pushed the Golden Lions into the 2A Western finals. Brooks rushed 11 times for 88 yards (8.0 yards/carry) and two touchdowns on the night, while also hauling in a 42-yard scoring pass as well in the victory [2013.12.04].
Shelby defeats North Rowan 45-21: With 1:25 left in the 1st quarter, Raekwon Washington got the Golden Lions on the board and tied North Rowan with a 1 yard touchdown run. With 7:45 left in the 2nd half RJ George scores on a 3 yard quarterback keeper to pull Shelby back even. RJ hit Antwan Wright for a 90 yard touchdown pass setting a new school record to pull the Golden Lions ahead 21-14. Kylon Ross' interception setup a 42 yard Jaquavis Brooks pass from RJ to put Shelby up 28-14 at half time. Luke Hayek kicked an 18 yard field goal with just over 3 minutes left in the 3rd quarter to give the Golden Lions the edge, 31-14. Shelby responded with a 47 yard touchdown by Jaquavis Brooks' run to extend the lead 38-21. Jaquavius Brooks got his 3rd touchdown on the night with a 6 yard run to extend Shelby's lead, 45-21 which was the final score. Luke Hayek was 6 for 6 on PAT for the night. Congratulations Michael Marable: Congratulations to Michael Marable on winning four team lifter awards at the N.C. State “Drug Free” Push/Pull Championship, Bench Press Championship and Deadlift Championship in Morganton, NC. Michael's team was sponsored by SHOUT4EDUCATION and NAUTILUS of SHELBY and competed as the Nautilus-Phoenix Power Lifting Team. Jim Putnam, Health/P.E. teacher at Turning Point Academy, was the coach & captain for the team. The team won 1st place in the N. C. State Bench Press Championship, the N. C. State Dead Lift Championship and the N. C. State Push/Pull Championship. The Nautilus Phoenix Powerlifting Team set 43 North Carolina State Records and 21 National Records during the power lifting contests [2013.11.25].
