Nine Cleveland County students are among the 800 rising juniors and seniors selected for the 2008 session of The Governor’s School of North Carolina, June 15-July 26.

North Carolina and funded by the General Assembly are Courtney Morehead of Burns High School; Justin Buchanan, Holly Hughes, Eli Hamrick, Bonnie Scruggs and Daniel Unites of Crest High School; Jay Morgan of Shelby High School; and Chelsea Ingram and Davis Phanthalack of Kings Mountain High School.
The Governor’s School of North Carolina is the oldest statewide summer residential program of its type in the nation. Each school system is allotted a certain number of students based on its 10th- and 11th-grade populations. Students are nominated by their local school superintendents in one of 10 curriculum areas: art, choral music, dance, drama, English, foreign language (French and Spanish), instrumental music, mathematics, natural science and social science.
The program is located on two campuses: Governor’s School West at Salem College in Winston-Salem and Governor’s School East at Meredith College in Raleigh.
Local students selected to attend Governor’s School East and their areas of study are Jay Morgan, Natural Science; and Courtney Morehead, Instrumental Music (flute).
Local students selected to attend Governor’s School West and their areas of study are Daniel Unites, Art; Bonnie Scruggs, Instrumental Music (cello); Davis Phanthalack and Justin Buchanan, Mathematics; Chelsea Ingram and Holly Hughes, Natural Science; and Eli Hamrick, Social Science.
