The orchestra sent in an audition file to the Festival of Gold Selection Committee and was immediately chosen to participate in this year’s event. Led by John Champney, the students prepared all spring and were one out of only three groups at the event asked to perform an encore. Shelby High ultimately took home the grand prize and hopes to travel to San Francisco next year to perform at Davies Hall.

Though the overall experience was structured in a competitive manner, Champney explained that such experiences are about the learning and opportunity for students to perform in world famous venues.

Recent SHS Orchestra Experiences
Mark Wood, a founding member of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, has held programs with Shelby High for many years. Working with the eclectic and electric styles of Woods and the sounds from the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, students are introduced to an alternative spin on classical music.

The SHS orchestra students have worked with Mike Marshall and Allison Fraser over the years, and recently performed the Carolina Panthers’ half-time show at Bank of America Stadium for PurrCussion.

The orchestra has also performed at Carnegie Hall on multiple occasions.
