The NC Council for Exceptional Children will recognize Jared Lankford at their 29th annual conference this weekend in Pinehurst.

Jared is a high school student at North Shelby and the son of Lori and Bryant Lankford. Amber Anderson, his Exceptional Children's teacher, nominated him for his advancements in communication and independent living.

“Jared has made so many advancements over the past four years,” said Anderson. “He is much more productive in the classroom and communicates well.”

“Jared is one of the best kids in the classroom and is a happy student,” Anderson added.

"I am very proud of Jared and his Yes I Can Award," said Allison Hodges, principal of North Shelby School.  "Jared has shown me what perseverance is and he definitely has a never give up attitude and spirit."

Jared was selected from a pool of candidates from across the state after letters of recommendation and samples of his work were evaluated by a selection committee. He will travel to Pinehurst with Ms. Anderson to receive his award and to be recognized in front of a large audience for his outstanding achievements.

More than 30,000 children and youth with disabilities have been honored with Yes I Can! International Awards since the program was established in 1981. The program celebrates the achievements of children and youth with disabilities and encourages children and youth with disabilities to seek their highest potential. The program also helps increase public awareness of the abilities, aspirations, and personal qualities of people with disabilities.
