Burns FFA takes top honors at state competition

The Burns FFA Food Science and Technology team won the Food Science and Technology Career Development competition at the 89th North Carolina FFA State Convention. The team topped 46 competing teams and will represent North Carolina at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana this coming fall.

“The kids really bought into the concept of putting in work,” said Justin Blanton, an agriculture teacher and FFA advisor at Burns High. “They worked before, during, and after school and even came in on their summer vacation days to practice.”

The competition is designed to stimulate learning activities in the science and technology areas of the food industry. Competitors develop technical competence and understanding in areas of safety and sanitation, food and nutrition labeling and food processing. Also, participants distinguish products and aromas used in the food science industry.

The Burns High team included Justin Matthews, Nevan Horton, Kayla Price, and Aaron Smith.

Blanton added, “I am proud of our kids for their hard work and dedication to the Burns FFA Chapter.”
