A Merry Little Math Day

Students gathered together at Gardner-Webb University for the 23rd annual mathematics competition sponsored by the Cleveland County Schools’ Educational Foundation, PPG Industries, and Laughlin Furniture Outlet. This year’s holiday-themed competition – “Have Yourself a Merry Little Math Day” inspired creativity and competitive spirit.

Participating students were from Boiling Springs, Casar, Fallston, Springmore, Township Three, Union and Washington elementary schools, and Kings Mountain and Shelby intermediate schools.

The Casar Elementary Number Nutcrackers were the overall problem-solving champions for the day. The Boiling Springs Rounding Reindeer team finished second overall, and the Springmore Elementary Merry Mathematicians finished third overall.

Problem Solving Tasks and Winners:
  • Task 1: Rudolph and His Friends - Students had to use their understanding of fractions to solve a variety of problems as fast as possible. The winning team for this task: Casar Elementary Number Nutcrackers 
  • Task 2: It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas - Students had to apply their understanding of the place value system. The winning team for this task is: Boiling Springs Rounding Reindeer 
  • Task 3: We are Santa’s Elves - Students had to design and construct buildings, along with calculating area, perimeter, and volume. The winning team for this task: Casar Elementary Number Nutcrackers 
  • Task 4: 12 Days of Christmas - Students had to use their knowledge of the order of operations to solve and write numerical expressions. The winning team for this task: Boiling Springs Rounding Reindeer

Working together, sharing ideas, and communicating while solving math challenges are vital to any team’s success. The following team exhibited outstanding collaboration: Fallston Polar “Express”ions
