Professional Development Guidelines
Cleveland County Schools believe in the importance of following six Core Standards for Teachers developed by the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards Commission. The Core Standards were presented to and adopted by the State Board of Education in November, 1999. They are intended for use by teachers, administrators, parents, policy makers, and by others interested in education and teacher quality in
North Carolina

Core Standard 1: Teachers know the content they teach.
Core Standard 2: Teachers know how to teach students.
Core Standard 3: Teachers are successful in teaching a diverse population of students.
Core Standard 4: Teachers are leaders.
Core Standard 5: Teachers are reflective about their practices.
Core Standard 6: Teachers respect and care about students.
In helping teachers become proficient in each of the standards, the following are staff development guidelines for Cleveland County Schools:
1. For renewal credit to be issued, all professional development must be registered through the Cleveland County Schools on-line registration process.
2. Cleveland County Schools staff development facilitators will request online prior approval for workshops held through the school district, check attendance online, and may provide certificates of attendance after each workshop to all participants for their personnel records.
3. Renewal credit for a completed district workshop requires an online evaluation before credit is posted.
4 Individuals taking classes outside of Cleveland County Schools must register through the outside Cleveland County Schools online registration process before taking a class to receive renewal credit. Participants must print the submitted registration form and obtain the principal’s signature on the form which will be sent to the Director of Professional Development along with a certificate of attendance or grade report for credit to be posted.
5 Prior approval to take a class does not give budget approval.
6. There is no state requirement for the amount of CEU renewal credit hours completed by Standard Professional 1 Teachers.
7 Standard Professional 2 Teachers must complete 15.0 CEU renewal credits within each five-year licensure cycle.
8. Standard Professional 2 Teachers in Grades K-8 must complete 15.0 CEU renewal credits, including 3.0 Reading CEU renewal credits (30 contact hours) within each five-year licensure cycle.
9. Supervising staff members who register through the outside CCS registration process may receive 1.0 CEU renewal credit for supervising a student teacher/intern per semester.
10. Renewal credit for student sponsored trips will only be given to individuals sponsoring student trips to other countries. The individual must register through the outside CCS registration process to receive 1.0 CEU renewal credit for planning, conducting, and following up on the out-of-country traveling and cultural experiences.
11. Mentors of ILT/LE 3s may receive 1.0 CEU renewal credit by registering through the CCS online registration process at the end of the school year.
12. Presenters/trainers will be issued renewal credit for first-time preparation of a workshop approved and registered by the facilitator.
13. Meetings will not be considered for staff development renewal credit.
14. Renewal credit can be checked by individuals using the Cleveland County Schools online registration program.
