VoCATS Purpose

The purpose of VoCATS is to provide schools with a computerized instructional management system that can be used for the following:

  • Planning instruction
  • Assessing students before, during, and after instruction
  • Evaluating student mastery of competencies
  • Documenting gains in student achievement
  • Meeting federal mandates

What is VoCATS?

VoCATS is a competency-based, computer-supported system encompassing the following:

  • Course planning
  • Lesson planning
  • Test/assessment items
  • Aggregrated and disaggregated reports by students, by class, by teacher, by school, and by LEA

Recognition

The VoCATS process has received recognition from the following:

  • The U. S. Department of Education has recognized VoCATS as a national instructional model in Career-Technical Education.
  • The Rand Corporation has cited VoCATS as an exemplary statewide system to assess student learning in Career-Technical Education.

Senior completers are administered the ASSET test. This test is used as a placement test by the community colleges in North Carolina. It gives students a headstart in enrolling at the community college.

The Vocational Education Information System (VEIS) also provide up to date data on the enrollment demographics of each course, a comprehensive follow-up of graduates, and reports on the Cooperative program. Employers of the workforce development completers are surveyed every other year. These results are also included.

Interest inventories, Talent Assessment, Career Choices, and ASVAB are also available through the Career Development Coordinator at each high school.
