Cleveland County Schools Grades 2 - 12 Novel List July, 2006
Click Here to View the Novel List To change Grade Lists, click on the down arrow at the bottom of each page The list linked above was developed and compiled by CCS teachers and administrators during the previous school year. It is a list that should be used by teachers in grades 2-12 and shall be shared with teachers in kindergarten and first grade. The list will be reviewed annually with school representatives from every grade, beginning in the spring of 2007. The instructional purpose of these guidelines and novel lists is to ensure that the same novels are not taught year after year, exposing students to the same books within the same school or from level to level. When teachers instruct with novel study units, it is expected that this list will be used.
A novel study unit is an in-depth study of a novel that involves using a broad variety of reading strategies and higher level of thinking questioning. The idea behind the novel study is not just to read the novel and be assessed, but also to apply reading strategies throughout the novel that enhance comprehension skills and encourage higher-level thinking.
The title, author, reading level and interest level have been provided for each list. The computerized Accelerated Reader (AR) program was used to find reading levels and interest levels. If you need more information concerning AR, please review their website at www.renlearn.com. Accelerated Reader uses the ATOS readability formula. ATOS is based on extensive research concerning:
The readability level measures the textual difficulty of a book. The Interest Level refers to the sophistication and maturity level of a book's content, ideas and themes. LG is defined as lower grade, MG as middle grade and UG as upper grade level content.
In determining the readability and interest levels of books, please refer to the website, www.renlearn.com and click on store, then quiz store, then type in title of book and search. You will then find the reading level and interest level.
Please adhere to the following instructions: Teachers will need to dispose of ALL other lists that have been developed over the years and begin using these newly developed lists. This list is a recommended list of titles to be used with a specific grade. A teacher or grade level will select the novels from the list that they will use throughout the year. A teacher is not expected to teach all of the novels listed during a school year. A good novel study may take weeks to teach. Teachers should select books/novels that go along with classroom themes, units and NC Standard Course of Study.
This list should be used before planning and using a novel with students. The lists below and above grade level should be reviewed to ensure that students have not and will not be studying that same book. If a title is not listed, teachers are free to use that book in instruction. Grade levels in each school should make sure novels are not being duplicated at the school. Also, the reading level and interest level of a book should be checked before it is used with students.
Students may select any of the novels from a media center or library for pleasure reading.
Teachers should NOT show videos of novels from a list above their grade level. Teachers should NOT select a novel from a list above their grade level for a read-aloud. A read aloud is a book that is read for enjoyment that has no formal assessment.
These lists will ensure that all Cleveland County Schools' students are exposed to all types of literature at different levels. If you have any questions, please call Donna Senter or John Goforth.
We are grateful for all who have assisted in developing these lists.
